twwoo1My discovery of the Oz books transformed me into a reader at age ten. I was on a Florida vacation with my family and very bored by long, empty days at the beach. Looking for anything to do, I wandered into a library book sale and spotted a careworn first edition of Jack Pumpkinhead of Oz. I was surprised to learn there was more than The Wizard of Oz, and decided to spend twenty-five cents to give it a try. I was immediately hooked. For the first time in my life I read a book cover-to-cover late into the night, and I went back to the library sale the next day and bought up the remaining half-dozen Oz books. The rest of my adolescence was a scavenger hunt to find these magical old volumes, most of which were out of print then.
